Thanks.  The command HPLAYER helped me solve the problem.  Somehow, one of my layers had be designated as the default hatch layer.  I don't recall doing this myself, but may have accidentally done it somehow. By typing the value "." (that is, simply a period) in the HPLAYER command, the hatch program uses whatever current layer you have designated for the hatch, instead of some other specific layer designated by the HPLAYER command.  Thanks for your help.
