We use sketchup just to show clients a few things. Say we are doing a fire station and it's being built already. The client wants to get a sign for the front. I might draw a very basic shell of the building in sketchup and use that to put some different sign options on. That way the client can see how different sizes look and I'll throw some brick or whatever textures on the building that belong on it. They can get an idea of how the sign will look with what is actually on the building. They do play pretty well together but I try only to use sketchup for some basic things probably because although it is a neat software, I just hate using it for anything detailed. We are doing mostly everything in autocad in 2d also so occasionally if I need something 3d I'll mock it up in sketchup.
Autodesk has Formit that is their answer to sketchup. I've played with it a tiny bit. It's pretty close to sketchup, but more things are built in, instead of you needing to get a extension for everything you want to do.
