It sounds like you may be using dynamic input.  Don't mistake the default input capabilities with AutoCAD limitations.  You can almost always enter 3D coordinates, whether they be absolute or relative and whether they are rectangular, cylindrical, or spherical.  Don't rely on tab keys alone. Use the coordinate separators that make sense (either comma or less than symbol) and the prefix that makes sense (#, @, * or none).
