Text Background Mask over top a screened solid hatch

I'm trying to place an mtext text string on top of solid hatch (screened color 254) so that the text will breakout the linework that is also underneath.

I try using an mtext background mask with the background of the background mask being the same color as the solid hatch (color 254) so that I do not get a big white box cutout on the solid hatch, but I either get a black box that covers the text, or I get a background color of the mtext that does not match the solid hatch even though the solid hatch is color 254 and the mtext background mask background is color 254 as well.  what plots out is the text with a darker shade background than the solid hatch even though they are the same color.

Anyone know how to resolve this with using the mtext background masking background?

Note: If I uncheck "Plot With Plot Styles" in the plot dialog box my mtext background mask and the solid hatch look correct with the mtext trimming out the linework underneath but without that white background box around the text.  But of course all the other linework and text plot in color and have no lineweights.
