.... I don't think the table object could ever come as close as third party addons that draw the Excel content as a block of native objects (mtext, lines, etc).
Well it could - if the effort was put forth to give the table object all of the properties and methods needed to replicate an Excel sheet.
Unfortunately, things like tables, sheet set manager, and some others were added to the application, then forgotten over the following years. CUI actually did receive a few enhancements after it was introduced, but those had to be made since it was so bad.
Having said that, I suspect the current status of tables in AutoCAD is sufficient for the vast majority of users out there. For those cases where a user needs more control and special formatting - that is when good third-party apps such as your XL2CAD can be added.
