Hello,
I'm using AutoCAD 2018 and have a problem interpreting the modelling errors it throws.
When lofting and selecting a guide profile (for example), I'm getting the following error:
Modeling Operation Error:
Error Code Number is 98036
I can't find a reference for the error code numbers anywhere. Is there a way to increase the error message verbosity? Previous versions of AutoCAD generated descriptive error messages, not just error code numbers. Fixing modelling errors with a descriptive guide to the problem is only achievable through trial and error...
Thanks for any help ![]()

HI @paulharlow,
I too wish I had access to a definitive list of what the error codes identify. Apparently they are only helpful to the Dev team. Do you have a model you want me to take a look at to see if I can figure out what might be failing?

Hi John,
to my mind, that doesn't seem a very "user-centric" move on the part of AutoDesk - a development environment that doesn't throw useful error messages?!
Thanks very much for your offer to look at my drawing - I've attached it to this post - as you can see, it's something I was modelling for fun than for any "serious" reason ![]()
I've centred the view on the lofting operation I'm trying to get working - there are two profiles - a 6-sided polygon and a 4-sided, long thin rectangle, joined by six polylines I'm trying to use as guides. Selecting any of the guides during the loft causes a modelling error.
I think the problem is related to how close together the two profiles are - if I move them apart slightly, some of the guides are accepted, but still not all of them!
Then again, it could be anything causing it to fail!
Thanks for your help,
Paul

Hi @paulharlow,
I took a look at your model and found that if I zoomed in very tight, many of the lines did not connect at all. I rebuilt much of the geometry and then lofted parts together, ran SURFSCULPT and ended up with this 3D solid.
Is this what you are looking for?

Hi John,
that's exactly what I was trying to get it to do.
I definitely zoomed right in on all the the points where the lines met the profiles and they appeared to join to me - am I zooming in wrong?!
I've not used the SURFSCULPT command before, so that's one to look up.
Thanks very much for your help with this - it's really very much appreciated.
All the best,
Paul

Hi @paulharlowm
Make sure that when you draw your geometry that you are using OSNAPs. I suggest that you should also not turn on too many at once.
To see the linework I used, you can select the 3dsolid and in the Solid Editing menu, select Extract Edges.
Here is some information on SURFSCULPT and MESHSMOOTH which you likely need to use at some point.

Hi John,
thanks very much for your guidance - I have to admit, I have pretty much all the OSNAPS turned on at the same time - I'd never thought it might cause problems.
I've always trued to avoid generating/using surfaces - I tend to only encounter them when a 3d modelling operation (like loft or extrude) goes wrong - I'll certainly review their usefulness based on what you say.
Thanks again for your help,
Paul
