AH HA! Correct. It's not MText, but rather it's a Multileader that's had the leader lines removed with the "Remove Leader" button on the Multileader Toolbar (the MLEADEREDIT command). I use Multileader text like this (without actual leader lines) because it allows me to turn on the "Background Mask" behind the text (which hides objects under the text) and it gives me the option of turning on the "Text Frame" around the Multileader text. I wish there were options for a Background Mask and/or a Text Frame available for MText, as there are available for Multileader text such as this.
And you're right, if I explode the Multileader, the Multileader text becomes MText (with that center top justification). The MText mirrors properly, while the Multileader (with or without leader lines visible) does not mirror quite as expected. I can live with this. I just have to make sure I'm mirroring MText, not a Multileader.
