My son recently moved to an apartment in a city. He was concerned if the couch he had would fit on the elevator so that he could get it into his new apartment. I created a solid model of the shape of the elevator's interior including the door opening (which turned out to be the limiting factor). By working interactively in the front, top, and side views I could rotate a solid model of the couch to various orientations and visually check for interference. I used a Wireframe visualstyle for the analysis. To check for interference you can do a Boolean subtract of the elevator-void solid and the item to be loaded on the elevator (the couch). Any solid left after the subtract is the volume of the interference.
