I am not aware that you can disable 3D totally in AutoCAD but what you can do if you end up in 3D is to use the command "SHADEMODE" and select "2D Wire Frame" from the option and this should put you back in 2D top down view.
Hope this helps and glad to hear your AutoCAD is not longer crashing.
