Do NOT use layer defpoints for ANYTHING.  It exists only as the definition point for dimensions and mimics layer 0.  That means anything you place on that layer, like construction lines, will be visible onscreen when your file is used as a reference file elsewhere.  While they may not plot they are still cluttering up the screen and there is no way to turn them off without freezing the entire reference file.  If you want a construction line that doesn't plot create a layer for them and make it no plot.
