Understanding PROJECTNAME

Hi all

A client of ours has a detailed drafting and document control manual (fun times for everyone) whereby electronic files are to be submitted at the conclusion of the project. A section on deliverables makes mention of the PROJECTNAME variable but I have never used this functionality before and their instructions are limited to simply requiring drawings to contain it but offer no particulars.

Also mentioned in the manual is that all reference files are to be bound to each individual file.  Asides from the fun of separating drawing files often containing dozens of tabs into individual files and the size of said files containing exactly the same references over and over, I am struggling to see what effect or impact any settings regarding PROJECTNAME would have on this process.

Can somebody please shed light on the process of using PROJECTNAME irrespective of the requested deliverables?

I have searched the forums for information on the PROJECTNAME variable and have encountered a lot of ambiguity regarding its use and usefulness.  If anybody could kindly provide a practical example on how they used it and it's effectiveness I would be appreciative.

regards

Distinguish between XREF ATTACH and OVERLAY, you have to use the OVERLAY type.

PROJECTNAME - Projectname is very useful,

Name of Project (for example MYPRJ): You store this Projectname MYPRJ in every DWG and reference all Files as Xref WITHOUT PATH-Info!
In Options/Files/Projectname, there you store all Paths for the XRef YOU need.

Send your DWG to another Company..
Anyone can use other xrefpaths and change them at any time, the XRef is found by Paths through PROJECTNAME, THAT IS IT

IT WORKS WONDERFUL!

not more, no less

In addition, the paths in the PROJECT (options) are only additional "support paths".

If a file can not be found, the search is made for the paths that you have defined for the project.

Technically:
Then you work 100% as usual. Only the project name must be saved in the drawing.

Assignment:
Make sure that the client makes guidelines for Xref-paths (maybe WITHOUT path required)

So if I understand this right, I must assign a project name (the same name) for every file I intend to reference into the drawing, AND the master drawing itself?

I take it I can use t his function retrospectively?

Whether you need to include the project name in each file should be
in the "detailed drafting and document control manual"*.

The project name is probably given to you by the client, just ask for it.

The project name is only useful for the files where you want to insert external References,
but you can insert references into each file.
(See also your Post: "Also mentioned in the manual is that all reference files are to be bound to each individual file.")

* We do not have the guideline..

There should also be whether you can attach external references with a path,
Or whether external references can only be attached without path information.

Contact the client by phone, many questions can be clarified quickly.

Using the PROJECTNAME doesn't come into play a lot since everyone is normally working on the same folder structure on the same network.  It only helps when dealing with a *lot* of XREFs in a number of different paths and they're all absolute with drive letters e.g. O:\WHATEVER\ClientNameHere\ProjectBlahBlahBlah\Subfolder\.  You might want to put them in X:\ClientName\ProjectNumber\XREFs.  By setting up a "project" (and you can set up several, although only one can be active at a time) you can provide a set of standard search paths to look in for missing XREFs without mucking about with fake drive letters, non-standard search path locations, and so on.  Of course it's usually easier to use either relative paths or the external Reference Manager to bulk repath the XREFs.

And required to bind XREFs... *shudder*  You have my sympathies.

Hi @Anonymous,

There is a lot of great information in this thread.  Here is an article that also describes the use of PROJECTNAME.

Its sort of funny that in all my years using the product, while aware of the feature, I have never utilized it!

Please add a post with your results as I am curious if it streamlines your process in order to meet your client specifications.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question.

Following up on your thread, it appears that several folks have tried to help on this issue. Were you able to find a solution? Or a workaround?

Did any of the posts in the thread help with your issue?

Please post back in the thread if you are still having an issue with AutoCAD or Select Accept as Solution for the post’s that helped.

Thanks for your time.

Apologies for the late reply, I had a couple of rare days off.

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanations guys, by far the best I've read on the subject.  I must confess I don't know how long this has been a feature of AutoCAD but I've been using CAD since release 11 and before now I've never encountered the need for this function in nearly 25 years.

Between revisiting the clients cad manual and exploring the subject in these forums we've found a solution that seems to work for everyone.

I do love it when the system works.

Thanks again
