AutoCAD - Layers in model space don't appear in the viewport

A couple of layers in model space don't appear in a new viewport. The layers are turned on, thawed, and unlocked. The layers were copied in from another AutoCAD file. I've checked the file the layers were copied from and they are on, thawed and unlocked in that file as well.

Please help!

Hi,

Did you check the "VP Freeze" option in the Layer Properties window ?

I'm an untrained novice...learning AutoCAD on the fly. I'm not sure how to check the 'VP Freeze' option, but I opened the Layer Properties window and double checked the status of the layers that don't appear in the viewport and they're all on, thawed and unlocked.

Hi @Anonymous,

I see that you are visiting as a new member. Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Go to your layout and double-click in the viewport. Start your Layer Properties Manager.

One of the columns is called VP Freeze. This will show layers that are frozen in your viewport but not necessarily in your model.

Thanks for the explanation about how to check the 'VP Freeze' option, but the layers aren't frozen.

Hi @Anonymous,

Can you attach a sample file for me to investigate? I would like to get this issue resolved for you.

Hi,

I think the problem is that the layer of the object is freeze in layer while you are in layout and inside the Model Space using view port.

The solution is:

1. Go to the layout.

2. Double click to the view port (that will make you go inside the model space using view port, make sure you lock the view port)

3. Go to Home, Layer > Look for the layer and see if the freeze is on/off.

See screen cast for more info.

As stated above, it could be that it is already frozen in the viewport, and you would have to double click inside the viewport to see that option is selected (WARNING make sure the viewport scale is locked, or dont do any panning or zooming while inside or you will mess up your viewport scale)

In addition to VP Freeze, there also is New VP Freeze, which will freeze a layer that is currently thawed in all new viewports.

If you click the wrong button when creating a new layer, it will create a layer which is already frozen in all existing and future viewports.  You want to make sure you click the button to the left of the button that is circled

Sorry John, but I can't provide the file. It contains sensitive government information.

No. The layers aren't frozen in model space within the viewport.

Try to figure out how we can help you without having a sample file available, otherwise you've pretty much shot down all the guesses to date.

Or do this:
Start a new layout. Do nothing more with it than set the size and select the printer. Set nothing else.
Create a new viewport using the core MVIEW command (type it, don't click on any buttons), do nothing more with that command than draw a rectangular viewport: you will see your entire model with all layers on/thawed visible by default (typical for all of us).
Now scale it and find the spot you wanted in the other viewport: you still have missing layers? Probably not, right? copy/paste this viewport into the other layout, turn it on if it turns off, and you have a fix.

Chris, I don't see a 'New VP Freeze' button. Is it a recently added feature? I've got the 2015 version.

It doesnt appear to be, in my 2015 it is in the same location.  the column is to the right of plot and to the left of description.

are you able to post some screenshots of your layer dialogs?

nice thing about the forums, if you use the Snipping Tool from windows, you can hit the copy button, then click on Photos in your message, click in the area where it tells you to drag, hit Ctrl+V and it will post the screenshot you just snipped, no need to save it and upload it as a separate action.

In regards to some of the suggestions above.  is it possible to create a blank drawing, and then copy the layers from the other drawing and see if the problem occurs?  if there is only layer content, I would think that would get you around the sensitive government data.

Right click on the title line in the layer palette and turn on (check) the desired columns

Hi @Anonymous,

I am checking back to see if my post or others helped you with your problem. Without a sample file it is difficult to take this issue any further. Please add a post with how you decide to proceed and your results so other Community members may benefit.

Chris, I finally found the 'New VP Freeze' button. The column had been narrowed to the point it was almost not visible. Unfortunately, that button was the same for the layer that doesn't appear in the viewport as for all other layers in the file.

Since I only need a PDF of the viewport for bidding purposes, I'm going to copy that layer into paper space on that viewport so it will appear in the PDF.

Thanks for your help on this anomaly. I'm going to close this thread to take it off the active list.

I just had a similar problem and it got me to this forum. Within the Layers Properties manager i had a tab called Viewport Overrides and the layer that was missing from VP was frozen within here.

I ran into the same issue and it was because the objects in the layer were annotative. Solved by checking: Show Annotative Objects

You just saved my file. Eternally grateful, that annotative option is the last thing i would've tried.

Long life to you, sr
