Hi All
This is my first post here.....
I use Autocad mainly for 3D using solids. Being in Australia my building design suite upgrade is not yet available maybe this month, according to the distributor.
They do not know the answer to this question re the classic workspace!
I would like to know for certain the 2016 version of Autocad supports the classic workspace, If I had to use the ribbon it would slow my workflow terribly, Using the classic workspace I have almost every tool in position around my main screen (I use 4 monitors in total) this gives me a desktop showing other views of the object and my properties palletes for the pbject being drawn while keeping my main screen clear for editing.
My classic menu system is set up so that for almost all the operations I perform there is an Icon to click directly, (The ribbon makes you page through its various modes to find a simple command)... Terribly slow and annoying
I sometimes use Autocad Architecture. With the ribbon unfortunately. when I do my drawing speed goes into slow motion. I hate it.
Can someone please confirm that the classic menu system is still available within Autocad 2016?
Thank You
Regards
John McNamara

Welcome to AutoCAD community,
first of all Classic workspace have been gone from 2015 and still NO workspace in 2016, this is the bad news. BUT the good news that you can get it from migration from earlier version.
Good Luck..

Welcome to the Autodesk forums.
Although it's true that AutoCAD no longer included a Classic workspace, you can easily add one yourself from scratch in just a few minutes.
How to create a Classic Workspace from Scratch
Also as noted above, you can use the Migrating tools to import your settings from a previous version. In fact if you're installing on a computer that already has a previous version of AutoCAD installed, the Migration dialog box will open automatically and ask you if you want to import your previous settings (including toolbars and menus) the first time you run 2016.

If the required tools are buried too deep, then bring them forward to where they are needed and move less-used functions back. Heck, build your own panels and tabs. Not any more work than setting up a classic-style workspace.
I'd also recommend checking out how to "tear off" Ribbon panels for floating toolbars. Under-utilized but highly effective as they retain Ribbon functionality such as fly-outs.
If you are going to fly by the seat of your pants, expect friction burns.
"I don't know" is the beginning of knowledge, not the end.

Thank you All for responding so quickly.....
I am using Autocad 2015 at the moment when I installed it last year it picked up that I had a classic workspace running I was able to import it from version 2014.
I am glad to hear it will be the same with 2016
I will investigate tear off panels as well.
Having used the same desktop over quite a few years I almost don't see the Icons on the screens my mouse just goes to them!. Well almost... Most of my work is freehand design.
I wonder home many Autocad users still use the classic desktop?

John

I've never used the toolbars much (keyboard command entry only). Here's the only thing I've really ever used and still use because I find it more convenient here than on the Properties palette, which is on my second monitor along with some other palettes. If only they would add these as options to the Quick Access Toolbar and I wouldn't need the Classic interface at all.

Turn on MENUBAR if you want it to feel more 'old school' as well.

Perhaps you're only imaging that "fear" is the reason why some prefer toolbars over Ribbons.
The reality is there are just as many scenarios where toolbars are more efficient than a Ribbons as there are not. Each has advantages, and disadvantages. An understanding that AutoCAD is used for a wide variety of tasks is the only thing required to know why not everyone wants or needs it configured the same way.

If you have more than a handful of toolbars on your screen, there is no advantage at all. Nada. Zip. It's even worse when you have them wrapped around the 4 edges of the drawing screen.
Can you be a little less vague?
I've got over 200 discrete tools surrounding my drawing area in my "Classic" workspace. They never move therefore I can pretty much pick them without even looking (muscle memory) Collectively, virtually everything I need for working in 2D and/or 3D is there without changing a thing. What I don't have a toolbar/toolbutton for I type as a command/shortcut. All together, the toolbars still take up less total space than an expanded Ribbon. 200+ tools always available and at my fingertips... what exactly is your objection to that?
"Worse"? Worse than what? "Worse" in what way?

"the ribbon is here to stay"
until they change it. MS introduced the ribbon, so maybe Autodesk will switch to tiles in 5 years. who knows.
i stand by keyboard shortcuts for 95% of your work. the other stuff, sure customize your ribbon and enjoy the head-bashingly-useful UI of the CUI editor. i hate that thing more than i hate Adobe PDFs.

Can't wait for those things to disappear as Autodesk has done in the verticals: seems time is on my side. Y'all enjoy.

But don't assume button clickers are some how inferior, Ribbon or toolbars: even @nestly2 probably runs at a pretty good click when he's drafting away

i was simply saying that the ribbon is here to stay in as much as the toolbars were before them.
it was a glib comment with some additional drivel about keyboard shortcuts being much more permanent.
and this response is about as useful as typing out "even though he thinks he is adding something different to what I wrote for some reason" ![]()
you might not be an autodesk consultant, but you definitely police the forums pretty thoroughly!

It's a bit of a stretch but don't think the command line couldn't be on the chopping block someday too. (Revit and Inventor don't have one)
Just in case anyone thinks I'm a Toolbar advocate... I'm not... I'm an advocate for being able to choose tools and workflows are best for your particular situation. My time is split pretty evenly between Ribbon based workspaces and an Toolbar based workspaces. I wouldn't want to see either go away at this point.

Another desktop niggle that has been around for a while at least back to version 2013 is the 3D orbit crash bug (it is triggered by holding down the shift key and while holding down the middle mouse button to rotate, zoom and pan).
There are many many dozens of posts around the net and on this sit on various possible ways to fix it. so no point in elaborating much here....
I do know that it happens on both my work computer (64 bit win 7) and my ASUS I7 Laptop at home. And I can confirm if you use the 3dOrbit Icon on the classic desktop it almost never happens. this applies to both machines. I presume this also applies to the ribbon although I have not tested it.
A lot of the work I do is Automation design..... Lots of linked files
As you can see a lot of files All 3D objects.
If I forget and orbit with the shift key / mouse method I am almost certain to get a crash on this project. Using the 3D icon it is fine
This bug is less likely to show up with smaller files........
The reason for mentioning this here is the public AutoCAD 2016 new feature list states that regen is now automatic, and line quality has been improved, rendering too.
It would be wonderful if the shift key / mouse method of orbiting works again.
When working the Left hand rests near the shift key and the Mouse is in the right hand, Having to make a Mouse trip to an icon slows your progress. this is something you do many hundreds of times a day.
Has anyone tested this feature with AutoCAD 2016, does it now work?

John

The comment about "Auto Migration" from 2015 to 2016 - that did not happen when 2016 was installed on my machine. Please be aware that you may have to manually 'migrate' from 2015.

Last time I was in an office, there was one guy who had his pgp file set up so all of his commands were at his left hand on the keyboard. When he would try to teach someone AutoCAD, he would start with, "To draw a line, just hit 'qq', for a circle 'qqw'." But this was not AutoCAD to anyone else, just to him and he was fast.
I use a separate 80-key keypad at my left hand with my right on the mouse. The keypad has no labels and I if you ask me where things are on it, I have a hard time telling you some of them, but when I am drawing and want those commands, my left hand just gives them to me.
Another guy in the office clicked buttons for commands. It looked like he had every button bar open at once at the top of his screen with miniscule buttons. You would think this was slower, but he just knew where every button was with some sort of muscle memory. There was a sort of flash of the cursor over them with a command at his service when it returned to the screen.
None of us would change because everyone elses method was surely inferior, yet all of them worked well.
I'm no help in getting you the classic workspace, but I do know you won't change how you issue commands to AutoCAD. It's like an addiction, like an alcoholic who found vodka shots and diet coke and doesn't understand why others won't try or change to the perfect combination.
"Ah feel yore pain."

Autodesk emailed me asking have I resolved this issue?
Well yes and no; Yes because I have AutoCAD 2016 running with a Classic workspace, And no because of the uncertainty of it remaining in future versions of AutoCAD.
Let us reflect for a moment on a well known operating system provider that tried to change their interface; The users voted by not upgrading, now two versions later having reinstated the deleted bits they are starting to gain a little traction.
I would mark this thread as ongoing pending further information.
