Dimensioning in model space.
I have AutoCAD 2016 out of the box and I'm trying to dimension an object in model space. I'm doing something wrong or something isn't set correctly because when I make a dimension the nodes are on the object but the actual dimension is on the 0,0,0 planes. I then have to move dimension so the extension lines are on the object and then move the nodes back to the original point picks. What am I doing incorrectly?

I do not understand what you mean by "but the actual dimension is on the 0,0,0 planes"
Can you provide a screen shot or the DWG file?

Dimensions land at elev. 0 on the "Z" plane of the current UCS. Change the origin of the UCS to match the elevation where you want the dims to land.
