xref inserted is only giving me older version of the drawing
When I insert an xref in model space, the drawing that shows up is an older version (even though in the little thumbnail image, it is the current version). When I go back and open this file on its own, it is the current version. I removed all the old versions and it still does this. I can't figure out how to even make another file or redo this all over again, it keeps happening!

Are you overlaying the XREF or INSERTing a block. Block are INSERTed, XREF's are ATTACHed or OVERLAY'ed.
It sounds like you're inserting a block and the file is using the block defined in the drawing block library.

What are the differences in the "versions"?
If you are only making changes to layer properties, change VISRETAIN to 0 and reload the XREF. The layer properties should update after that.

The you either aren't SAVING the source XREF prior to XREF'ing, or you aren't calling the file from the right path and are XREF'ing an older version.
OR as another poster stated your changes are only layer related and VISRETAIN is holding the layer settings in the target file.
