Look into binding them. You can do that from the XREF manager by right clicking on each item in the list and selecting BIND. There are two options for binding, insert and bind. The bind option will add the file name as a prefix to layers, text styles, dimstyles, etc. Not always desirable unless you think there is a chance that both files have different definitions for the same name. Using the insert option, anything with the same name will take on the properties from the referencing file.
