Layout tabs won't open in 3D model AutoCAD 2016

We have an AutoCad 2016 file created with a 3D model & various detail paperlayout tabs.

When i try to load into an ealier version it will open the file but not allow me to change to some of the tabs. it just gives the timer wheel.

i have left on for 24 hours to see if it would kick in but it just hangs there.

I have tried creating a W-Block, Auditing & Purging but nothing seems to have any effect.

when checking the file after its loaded i do have a lot of modelling operation error, unknown surface type in make silhouettes.

and this is a trusteddwg file.

we have to submit to our clients in 2014 format, but if they can't open the file will cause problems for us.

You'll most likely need to post your dwg for real assistance.

you can try using enablers if you know the verticals used to create the file.

Also you can try opening it in a platform that doesn't have errors and try -EXPORTTOAUTOCAD

i might try saving it to a previous version as well just to see if it makes a difference.

Hi @Anonymous,

Can you tell me what is on the Layout tabs? (or better yet attach a sample drawing) If the detail views are created using Viewbase that will be totally different than if you just have viewport views of your model.

We are just using the basic package of autocad.

the layout tabs only have viewports

i have managed to get over it by copy and pasting the model into a fresh drawing then pulling in new tabs from the corrupt file.

this has worked but obviously i am losing any associativity to the model.

Change your workspace to 3D Modeling or 3D Basics.

Hi @Anonymous,

I'm afraid I don't have a solution, just a diagnosis..

I suspect the layouts that didn't open are the ones where you used ViewBase and related commands..

Unfourtunately the views created in later releases with this command are not compatible with earlier releases..

I also think that importing the layouts severs the link to the command and the views become just blocks, thats why you were able to import them, and the assossiativity was broken as you said..

Hi @elshawadfy,

This indeed sounds like it might be the case. I hope that @Anonymous can confirm this by marking your post as the Accepted Solution.

I am also reaching out to our team to see if the documentation can be improved regarding the Inventor piece and backward compatibility issues.

Thanks for your contributions.

I had an issue with layout tabs never opening, but that was because of an XREF, not the viewports. When I detached or removed the XREF(S) I was able to open the tab.
