I know its in a block as when I explode all the blocks it becomes visible and I can delete it - however, I'm left with a file with all the blocks exploded.

Is there anyway to exclude anything that isn't visible from all blocks, or alternatively 'unmask' the bits that are hidden so I don't have to explode everything?

....

Perhaps the overly obvious question, but I'll ask it anyway:  Are all Layers thawed and turned on?  If not, do that [you may have to REGEN to get everything to appear].  Whether or not any Layers were frozen or off, run UNHIDE or UNISOLATE [both Aliases for UNISOLATEOBJECTS] in case the Block(s) in question had been hidden as objects rather than by way of Layers, and then you should be able to determine which Block is the offender by picking on any formerly-hidden unwanted bit(s).  Then edit just that Block definition, or Explode just that Block if you prefer.  LAYERP should then take you back to whatever conditions were before, or alternatively, Save a Layer stAte before thawing/turning-on everything, and Restore that after editing the Block.

I would be reluctant to just "exclude anything that isn't visible from all blocks" in a wholesale way [though that would be possible] -- you might get rid of some thing(s) you don't really want to, and not realize it at the time, but could discover it only after it's too late [e.g. after closing and re-opening the drawing, when you can no longer Undo what you did].
