It does not depend on rendering, it depends on type of geometry used and the visual styles you use.
In Civil 3D except of alignment, profile view and section view the whole geometry is 3D, and using another style than "3D Wireframe" needs the GPU.

No problem with your opinion!
I just wanted to make sure for future readers that they don't think it does never work. It works generally, just a few of the users have issues.
