Just to make sure, not knowing what you mean by "discrete graphic card", at least avoid shared memory (independent of 2D or 3D work)

There are some threads here which show issues with not beeing able to switch to the better graphic card. But that does not mean it does not work or it is a global problem for all users. I know enough users working well with 2 graphic cards. And I would go a step further to say in >99% of these cases a careful setup of the operating system and drivers would make all working well.
