It will need to be longer if you want the squares' corners chamfered or "rounded."
The hexagon edges are 1 drawing unit long when used at a scale of 1. The origin is in the middle of a 45°-angled square / middle of a hexagon.
You will probably want a different pattern name. If you leave it in a file of its own, make sure the file name [minus the .pat filetype ending] exactly matches the name of the pattern inside the file.
