Why does my dimension change when I add a radius

CAD1.jpgI have noticed recently that when I add a radius to a corner my dimension changes. For instance I can have a 3" square. I can add the dimension, then radius 2 corners a 1/2" and when I do the dimension changes to read 2". It's reading the vertical line when it should be reading the horizontal lines.

If you're talking about Associative Dimensions, I think it depends on how you drew the Dimension, and even what you're Dimensioning.

I find that if the starting condition is LINE objects, and if I do it by the select-object option and pick the vertical right edge in your image, then that's what it's Associated with, so naturally it will go along with any change to that edge.  But if I Dimension by picking points, using ENDpoint Object Snap on the right ends of the top & bottom horizontal edges in your image, and with the Osnap aperture seeing the Lines but not by encompassing the corners, then it's Associated with those ends of those Lines, and does what you want when the corners are FILLETed.

But if the starting condition is a POLYLINE of line segments, it isn't that straightforward.  It seems to keep to the vertex that is earliest in the Polyline's drawn direction, and keep to the single segment that follows, which means it even shifts to Dimensioning between the ends of the new arc segment at the corner, rather than any line-segment edge.

Houston, sorry, I'm a Dallas fan but.... glad to help.

Funny, never ran into this before and was fun to play with.

I knew it had to be an Association issue for you so Mr. Google helped out.

To Disassociate a Dimension:
At the Command prompt, enter DIMDISASSOCIATE.
Select one or more dimensions to disassociate and press Enter.

If you type that in and pick your dimension it will disable the association with the end points of the rectangle/square, circle, what ever and never change to match what you just took away, the end points like Mr. Cooper said. Strange that I could not find this command inside the Properties when I select the dimension.

The great thing about this command, it is only for the one you select. Not a full time command you have to go back and forth with. If I was you I'd put in in your ACAD.lsp or ACAD.pgp command and make it shorter or a Pick box on screen.

Hope this helps!

JRR!

It depends on the geometry that its associated with.
