I would never propose to create a new dwg file and rename it. This destroys all xref links. Instead your IT staff should have in place a method to backup any files that’s changed at end of day. Also deploy shadow copy periodically throughout the day so that staff can restore backup copies in case files get corrupted or overwritten by mistake. Then there are project. milestone copies made and stored for retrieval as needed in case clients decide to go back to a particular design in a point in time. These are just some examples on how to handle file backups and retrievals typically stored on a network server.
