Point P is initially at #1 on the surface of the 3DFACE. Where its path leaves the face is point Q. Point Q becomes point P for the adjacent face and a new Q is calculated. The process continues until there's nowhere lower to go from the last point P. As noted, the adjacet faces for when P is at #2 slope upwards, the path from there follow the edge (crevice) to the corner at #3.
