From what I read of the original question, the OP wants to undo changes that are not view related (erase lines, draw lines etc) not limit the number of Undo actions required to get there. The lisp routines I suggested above would save the view states of all the views. Then you could do your undo operations as far back as need. Then use the second lisp routine to restore the views.
If I have enough time later this week, I might write something like that as I too would find it useful at times.
