All depending on how the plug-in autorun is organized. If the plugin is made in accordance with the modern requirements of Autodesk, then it is located in the ApplicationPlugins folder and in a subfolder with the bundle extension and contains the PackageContents.xml file. This file lists which versions of AutoCAD are supported and all these versions of AutoCAD will run the plugin themselves. No copying of settings and reinstallation of the plugin is required. When a new version of AutoCAD is released, the developer publishes a new PackageContents.xml file that specifies this new version as well. In this case, you will need to download this new version of the plugin (if you have disabled automatic updates).
However, developers do not often follow new releases and may not adhere to Autodesk standards. In this case, you will have to find out from the developer yourself what and how you need to update.
