I suspect you are missing a font file.  Are they in a Style that uses a .SHX font?  The .SHX fonts that come with AutoCAD are defined to be capable of doing vertical text, but that needs to be an explicit part of the definition of each character in the font [find 00E >here<], and it isn't a choice in .TTF fonts at all.  The description sounds like you are missing the .SHX font used for the Style [or maybe you have a version of it without the vertical-possible element in the character definitions], but other people's machines have it.
