I'm looking for the easy way to manipulate a 3d solid to a skeletal form.
For instance, if I wanted a 3d shape to be hollowed out and see-through, only connected at its angles. Structural framing only.

If I understand you correctly, then to see through the solid you just need to switch the visual style to XRay. Or use the regular 2D or 3D wireframe style. Use _VisualStyle command or the on-screen menu in the upper left corner of the model.
