AutoCAD is a direct solid modeling environment. Do not try to apply here your habits from the world of parametric programs. Sketching in most cases is a waste of time. You can immediately model solids, merge and subtract them, as well as modify them arbitrarily by dragging faces, edges and vertices. Just select the desired faces and move them where you want with the usual _Move command. This makes it easy to stretch and compress assemblies of hundreds of parts. You do not need to carefully plan the parameterization in advance. Easier than you can imagine. It is enough to be able to select subobjects. Use the surface selection mode for this, or just hold down CTRL. The selection frame also works with sub-objects.
