I get what you're saying, however, you actually suggest the opposite from a single source of "truth"...
I was using this function also as a shortcut for another thing - Say, I can categorize my documents in several ways, although in the windows folders I can only organize them in one specific way. Each document can belong to several categories (but as you say, I want only one "source" and not 5 copies per 5 categories). If I want to publish all documents of a single category (to go through them) I would have to open all of them in AUTOCAD. That might be 100 documents for me, at a time. If I have files from many different folders in a single category, opening them all is hell (imagine having to go into 100 different folders). This function could allow me to publish a DWG/PDF of these 100 files without opening all of them first, and also lets me have an organized list of shortcuts per category to open the specific ones I do need to edit, prior to publishing, without the folder mess (if only it allowed adding a document to several sets).
If I want to publish documents belonging to a different category, which may have some overlap with the previous one, you suggest making a new document with the other one as an XREF, but then what happens is that the new one actually isn't the true source (if it was saved before an XREF is edited, will it be published with the changes in the XREF or without them?), and also whatever I link to isn't the original, so I can't use that as a shortcut to open the original either.
Do you know a function that can fit this purpose better than the sets?
