Have you tried using a sectionplane? You can make a slice with a certain thickness and you can draw your own section plane giving it an angle or position that suits best to your needs.

On the other hand, have you thought about using the AutoCAD Plant 3D toolset for your piping needs. It has a more intuitive Ortho generation functionality that allows you to us a 'viewbox' very similar to your section plane to generate views of 3D piping (including appendages, instruments or equipment) . The toolsets are separate software packages based on AutoCAD (and containing all) functionality. A license for AutoCAD full includes a license to use the toolsets.

It also contains spec functionality, iso & Bom generation.
