AutoCAD 2023: What is the difference between the square and the rectangle grips?

AutoCAD 2023: What is the difference between the square and the rectangle grips?

Is there any specific function for the rectangle grips other than having them at the midpoint between the square grips?

The square ones are the vertex locations [part of the definition of the Polyline], and the rectangular ones are the midpoints of the segments [not part of the definition, but only a result].  Note that if you hover over them, the pop-up lists of options are a little different.
