I've fought this problem, and found two solutions. 

In some cases, the pdf will still print to paper with the hatches, but will not display in a pdf viewer or will have weird  vectors through what should be a solid color. I found that at least in adobe there is a setting around vectors that can be turned off to display correctly. I have too many users of my pdfs for that to be viable. 

So I experimented, and found that gradient does not have the display problems. Its slower, but simply change the hatch to gradient, and assign the same color for both color options.  The pdf file size grows considerably, but pdf viewers read it correctly. 

 

Hope that helps, it took me a hell of a lot of time to sort out for my purposes.
