DGN Styles in AutoCAD

I'm trying to convert Bentley Microstation DGN files to work with in AutoCAD, and I'm frustrated by the exported linetypes in the DWG files that really don't look anything like Microstation.

For example:

  • the Microstation linetype "DGN 4" for centerlines in my drawings, is a long dash - short dash - long dash style
  • the exported "DGN Style 4" in the converted DWG file is a long dash - dot - long dash style (why??)

The ACAD linetype definitions for CENTER, HIDDEN, DASHED, and PHANTOM are visually much closer to the Microstation standard linetypes, but still clearly different. My goal is to align the DGN and DWG native drawings as close as possible, since we work extensively with both formats.

I can't find any information that helps me to understand any reason for the differences, so now I decided to try and approximate the Microstation linetypes by painstakingly measuring the geometry (see the example screenshot below). I actually created a substitute linetype for DGN Style 4 that in test plots is virtually identical to the Microstation plotted drawings, at 1:1 scale.

This is how I defined the linetype:

*Custom DGN 4,DGN Style 4 ___ _ ___ _ ___ _ ___ _ ___ _ ___
A,3.175,-1.567,.7625,-1.567

I'd like to know if anyone is experiencing the same issue and has a better solution?

FYI, below is a screenshot of all 7 of the standard Microstation linetypes.
