I don't know what happened to my earlier reply but it appears to have disappeared from the newsgroup.
To recap, viewedit (pictured in your first image) only applies to viewports created with viewbase. The error you are getting in response to viewbase is typical useless gobbledygook. It should say "Don't pick a regular viewport. Pick a viewbase viewport." To edit in a viewport double click within the viewports extents. To display the viewport make sure the layer on which the viewport is drawn is on, thawed and viewport thawed in paperspace. It might be that your viewport lined up with your titleblock, in which case, you may not see it. It is also possible but unlikely that you have accidentally put the model space objects into paper space by using the chspace command.
If that doesn't answer your question, post the drawing. Alfred's suggestion of using recover or audit on the drawing might be appropriate.
