Believe me, I have tried almost everything.
As I see it, the files are too big and messy, with references a lot of different places.
Is there a way to "convert" the dwg in to something more like a snapshot, where all the lines are combined, reducing size, but also removing all references to other drawings/libraries?

Only way to do what you ask is to manually edit the content yourself; can you share that DWG file here?
Unless all you need is a raster screenshot of course, you know how to do that.

In my company, when I need to convert dwg. file to jt. I always use the FactoryCAD plugin for Autocad. You can download it from the Autodesk site. Of course your company need to have the license for that, so if don't just tell them to think about it, cause it's really helpful tool to use.
