What you're seeing in the horizontal direction is the distance to the next isometric grid point when the Snap value is 10 [= 2 x 10 x the cosine of 30 degrees].  [Look closesly for the white grid points.  I'm not sure why it's giving me 17.31 in the image -- it really ought to round to 17.32.]  But you should still be able to draw vertical Lines at multiples of 10 units rather than 17.3whatever, with Snap on in Isometric mode.  You can also press F5 to cycle between the "planes" of isometric drawing, if that helps you do what you want ["top" in the image"].

But also, without turning Snap off with F9, you should be able to "aim" with the cursor location in whatever direction you want and type in a value for the distance, not limiting yourself to positions that the cursor will Snap to.  If drawing on the "top" isometric plane, you would need to have Ortho turned off [F8] to draw a vertical line, but Snap locations can "lock" you into a vertical direction.
