How to 'hold' a snap

Hey all!

So starting a job that utilises AutoCAD straight after graduating from 4 years of using Rhino in uni has created one frustrating situation in which I have to relearn CAD habits that I've been accustomed too. One such issue is the ability to 'hold' onto a snap as i move view or drag my mouse across the screen. In Rhino you are able to confirm and select a snap point by pressing Alt, you can then change your view/manoeuvre around the screen without fear of loosing the snap point as Rhino will continue to hold onto the snap selection until you select a new point or escape the hold.

For example, I want to draw a line to continue a kerb for a road project. Beneath the kerb are multiple services crossing the path of where I need to draw my line. I want to use the 'extension' snap to make sure the new kerb is following the existing kerb. After a minute of hunting the snap and actually getting the extension to show, I following the green dashed line to try to hold onto the extension snap, but as I zoom out to continue the line AutoCAD looses the snap and I have to go back to hunting the extension snap again. If I pick a starting point and try to hunt the extension command at the point I wish the finish the line it doesn't show up.

I'm sure this is a very simple fix that I'm completely missing, but  from what I've read online no one has answered this question. How do I confirm a snap and make AutoCAD hold onto that snap like Rhino does?!
