CPU & Fan Ramp Up - One Solution
I have a few installations of Autcad setup as test beds to troubleshoot issues:
-Standard Commecrial Windows 10 Pro Box, 64 Bit
-MAC Laptop
-Secure PC Locked down with Macafee encryption and Crowd Point Scanning Tools.
For YEARS the locked down PC would be plagued by CPU and Fan Ramps ups to the point that Autocad would run Laggy then recover. Previously MacaFee was adding to the resouce consumption with the level of real-time scanning happening. But it wasn't until recently when Crowd Point was being tested as an alternative to eliminate the resource overhead which we now need to work remotley through secure VPNs.
An interesting observation was made recently (on th esecure PC) and was back checked against previous forum posts. It turn's out the "Autodesk Desktop App" requires bursts of resources to do whatever it does. This was discovered as we walked through setep involving re-imaging the secure laptop. As a plus we did not have to do a clean install to clear up the issue. The Desktop Application unistalled in a manner that seems to have released all resource requirements from the Laptop. This was tested both as a clean install WITHOUT Autadesk Desktop and as an uninstalled Desktop Application arrangement.
Personnally have not experienced CPU and Fan ramp up on a standard setup OTHER than on a DELL based system (odd I know). but there are few forum post that have expressed this concern. I have tried to track this down on Lenovo Think Stations and Dell Workstation Series Desktops. I personnaly have only seen this on Dells, take that for what it is worth, just an observation at best no thourough testing on that aspec.
SECURE ENCRYPTED SETUPS
Another obstacle with MacaFee is the web browser. You wil lget better performance from your PC if you keep the browser shut down when you are performing CAD work. MacaFee's real-time scanning gets pretty busy when browser is open. You can throttle back the real-time resources the scanning process are allowed to use. But even low level CPU usage of 3% cause the Fan to ramp up on a Dell 7710 series laptop while a HP Z-Book sitting next to it in the same configuration will contue to operate quietly with no fan operation, The Dell 7710 is XEON Based while the Z-Book is I7 Based.
SIDE NOTE
Other than overnight batch rendering jobs I have have seen little performace vs cost benifit regarding th eXEONs. My personal choice for performace at this time is an i9 based system with a NVIDIA P2000 card, 32GB mem seems to be fine for construction projects. I cannot speak to the level of ram for inventor projects. Of course trhat is relative to how heavy your models are. >> And the certified vidieo cards do seem to offer a bit more reliability than the gaming cards. BUT if you are OK with performing a restart every now and then to clear up a graphic issue and you keep to drawings as light as can be 1 - 2 meg there is no reason not to use a gaming card to save money. Even though th echip sets may be the same between the gamming and professional cards the units as a whole are diffent and are tested at totally different levels of scrutiny
Thier is no bias towards any specific OEM all observations were a based on the equipment suit avaialble at the time the tests were performed.
