Preserve layer states after renaming layers
Please forgive me if this is covered in a topic somewhere. I just don't have time to look right now.
We have plan sets that have been finalized and documented. As the project has evolved we now need to divide it into phases. This will require renaming layers that are being used in some of the drawings. This will of course impact the layers states in those drawings which may have specific colors, linetypes, etc. applied to the layers. I'm needing a way to re-apply those settings to the renamed layers. It will be a monumental task to go through each file and manually remap everything. Are there any other more efficient ways to do this?

Knowing your skill level I guess there is no way around it. Do you know of a way to print out a report of the current layer states? That would at least be better than having to guess what they were.

By the way, when I say layer states, I am not talking about saved layer states. I am talking about the state of the current layer settings in the files.

Q: if you are just renaming a layer, wouldn't everything else (color, linetype etc.) stay the same as it always has, or are you really doing more than just renaming layers?

We are just renaming the layers. However the files get XREF'd into the plans with Visretain=1. Therefore the plans will end up with the new layers showing and they will not have the overrides that were applied for the plan set.

I'm contemplating a workflow that might help. When the new layers get loaded into a sheet file, they come in with the layer state of the source file. Thus I am thinking I could export my layer states from the sheet files, load them into the source file, apply them and then rename the layers. Now when they get loaded into the sheet files they will come in with the proper layer state. From there I can create a new layer state using the layers as they come in.
I don't quite know how to make this work for the layout viewports which have their own overrides. Any ideas?
