Detailing an assembly in one file from a 3d mode to layout

I have an assembly of several individual 3d solids drawn in Autocad.  I can dimension one detail....on one layout.  How can I detail a second detail on layout two.  As soon as I turn layers on they show up on the layout one.  How can I only associate the detail/layer to that layout mode.

Don't use the global layer on/off freeze/thaw. Use the viewport freeze/thaw buttons in layer manager. Just double click in the viewport to activate it and click on the rectangular icon in layer manager pull-down to freeze layers you don't want and thaw layers you do want. This won't effect any other viewports or the model space objects.
