API for user and assignment management
Hi,
I just discovered the new plan to push named users instead of network license, and as an IT admin in charge of managing Autodesk licenses servers across the 10 countries were we are operating, I have real concerns on what will happen with this new model forced to us.
I have already raised a similar question in the past since we are using BIM360 and I wanted to be able to invite/assign/remove users as they come and leave our company. The answer I got was that no API was available and all those steps needed to be done MANUALLY in the admin interface (CEP).
Will such an API will be available when named users will be applied?
If you manage 1000+ licenses and with a turnover of 40%+ per year, it will become a full-time job to assign/revoke those licenses manually.
Otherwise, it's maybe time to look for other alternatives...

Hello @Anonymous !
Did I understand you correctly that you are requesting the data API to manage users?
API for reporting is available for Enterprise plan.
But what I can suggest here is that you were refereed to BIM360 Admin console where API are available.
You can learn more about this by links:

or https://fieldofviewblog.wordpress.com/forge/

Hi Lena,
Thanks for the links, but those are to manage users in BIM360.
What I'd like to get is a similar API to manage users in Autodesk CEP, and being able to assign/remove them license.
Regards

@Anonymous - are you using conventional licenses, or Enterprise token-based ones?

Hi @Anonymous
Autodesk Enterprise Token Flex is a licensing model that charges based on product usage. It's only available to Enterprise customers at the moment. See more information here: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/customer-service/account-management/account-profile/enterprise-accounts/ea-token-flex-licensing
So if you're not an Enterprise customer then yes you're using the 'traditional' licenses.

Thanks for the link @lynn_zhang . It's expensive from most standpoints, but when you have a large base load of licenses (especially across large numbers of offices) it's worth the cost. @Anonymous you should look into it if only to know your options.

Hi all,
There are a couple automation options that are currently available for managing users and assignments, and there are more coming in the future. Here are some details:
Currently Available:
- SSO integration: The current SSO integration will allow you to configure SSO authentication for your email domains so that users must login with their company credentials rather than a separate Autodesk username and password. With this integration you can choose to have users auto-added to your user list in Autodesk Account when they authenticate so that your user list is up to date with all the active users. When a user leaves the company, they will no longer be able to login to any Autodesk product or property. More details are here
- Global Access: If you are on an enterprise model you may set Global (default) access in your user list to a chosen set of products. That way any user who is added to the list will automatically have access to any products you've decided you want to make available to everyone in your organization. You can still manually assign any products that you don't want to be generally available.
- Bulk Management: Although this isn't true automation, we do offer bulk management capabilities in Account to invite and assign users in bulk via a CSV import that may be useful for you. More details are here
Coming in the future:
- Active Directory sync: Once you have SSO configured for your domain, you will also be able to integrate your active directory and select active directory groups to sync to Autodesk. You can set assignment policies for which products those users can have access to. With this users will be automatically added, assigned, unassigned, and removed based on the policies you've set.
- Group management: You can create a group and add users to the group (either manually one by one, through an import, or via Active Directory sync) and choose products to be assigned to that group.
- User Management API: This one is further down in the backlog, but it will allow you access a Forge API to manage users remotely.
For the future facing capabilities please check the Autodesk Account roadmap for updates on timing and other details: https://customersuccess.autodesk.com/articles/autodesk-account-roadmap-update#inprogress
I hope that helps!
Thank you,
Emily

I am also very interested in an API to manage my AUTODESK users. Actually it is very time-consuming to synchronize corporate directories with external portals.
btw. is this threat fluently updated or how can I detect, when API is ready to be tested?
Best regards
Markus

Hi, we would like to register our interest in the user management API you mentioned. Any update on that? Our greatest need is for visibility and management for BIM 360 licenses. Being able to query last used time, and assign/unassign seats via API would save us a ton of time. Managing license assignments for 1000+ users using the web dashboard and spreadsheets is very time-consuming.

Has there been an updated time-frame on when this will be complete? Either Active Directory sync, or managing users through an Azure AD Tenant, or a user management API would be helpful, tho tbh an active directory sync seems the most inefficient in this scenario.
Thanks,
John

One more follow up on this. Making a Power Automate connector would also be an acceptable solution for license management. It appears Autodesk may not feel it's in their best interests to allow managers to shift licenses around but I think its reasonable to concede that there are many legitimate needs for the ability to automate license management.

I would also like to manage users via API
Please advise on Autodesk's timeline on enabling this service

No one here is Autodesk.
PLUS... Autodesk never pre-announces new items ahead of release dates.
Sorry.
