Problem:
Some layouts become very laggy, without obvious reason.
When first created and set up, the - latter - affected layouts run perfectly well. No problems at all, either in paper space or model space. After a while, they get affected by a heavy lag. The lag exists only in paper space. When entering model space the lag disappears, only to reappear after returning in paper space.
The lag, affecting greatly the cursor’s movement, makes selecting and double-clicking a real challenge.
One interesting point is that the affected layouts have not been edited after their initial creation: I create a new layout, set it up, and then leave it unedited while drawing in model progresses. After some consequent saves and reloads of the file, the problem appears.
Another interesting point is that the lag disappears temporary when dragging elements (in paper space), during the process of a command (like move, copy, et.c.).
I have also observed that when trying to edit a value of an entity, in the affected layout (in paper space), in the Properties window, the fields keep continuously reseting themselves to the previous value, with a rate of some hundreds of milliseconds. It is like something forces the affected layouts in a perpetual refresh…
Troubleshooting (unsuccessful):
I’ve tried all three settings (0, 1, 2) in the LAYOUTREGENCTL command to no avail.
I’ve tried all possible settings for the GRAPHICSCONFIG command, with no result.
I tried deleting all the entities present in the affected layouts (viewports, blocks, poly lines et.c.), but the lag was still present, in the - now - empty layouts.
Workaround:
The described lag does not affect plotting, and thus is not of a great concern, until when changes are needed in the layout. In most cases I take the time to delete it and create a fresh version of it. And everything works perfectly fine, until the next time the problem reappears out of nowhere…
Final thoughts:
I’ve been living with this annoyance for some years. After my initial, brief and unsuccessful troubleshooting, I decided that following the workaround described above was preferable, than investing more time in searching for a permanent fix.
But the problem has now become intolerable. I’ve already spent some workhours looking for a solution in various forums and sites, and tried out various solutions, but nothing has worked for me so far. Nor I’ve found any information that could explain the source of the problem.
