Plotting direct from Autocad and pdf is substantially different
In both 2020 and 2019 I have had difficulty in getting acceptable plot quality when printing direct from Autocad. The line thicknesses are all too thick and the variation in thickness in the plot style dialogue box makes little if any difference. Printing to PDF then plotting the same drawing results in a much finer and acceptable plot.
In fact settings in the plot dialogue box seem to make no difference to line weight when printing direct from Autocad.
I note that other posters have had similar problems but in the opposite way.
Any solutions welcomed

When I plot to HP DesignJet 500 plotter in my office directly from AutoCAD I get the same results as when I print from PDF, so I suppose it is printer (plotter) software issue on your side.

I guess so, but where to start looking? The plotter is obviously capable. I have checked out the usual dialogue boxes but at a loss as to where to look next.

The problem is that when you print from AutoCAD (from Print window) directly to printer (plotter), you cannot change any printer (plotter) specific settings. When you print PDF from Preview.app you have access to printer (plotter) software settings -you can adjust print quality (DPI), color options, ink related settings, etc.

And I'm not sure which printer (plotter) software specific settings are used when you print directly from AutoCAD.... That is a big problem. Sorry, I don't have answer to your last question.
