I see that you're posting for the first time. Welcome to the Autodesk Community, and thank you for posting your question here in the AutoCAD for Mac forum.
Are you looking at the Layers Palette? To turn a layer on or off from the Layers Palette window, click the little visibility circles to the left of the layer name. A filled circle means the layer is on, an open circle means the layer is off. You can also use the LAYOFF or LAYON commands, which will prompt you to click an object on the layer you'd like to change.
