They stay only because AutoCAD is unable to delete them due to restrictions imposed at the file locations: that must change to them to disappear again. One culprit may be a loss of sync between your PC and your "apple cloud".
Another may be folder rights: you're log-in does not allow for read/write/delete/rename. Another: an over-aggressive 'versioning' feature that hangs on to deleted content.
You cannot turn off DWL files: it's a feature of the program outside of your control.
