As @Michiel.Valcke mentions, a closed area is required to get any hatch to work. BO (boundary is a great way to get this to work if your lines are really close but not quite closed.
I have attached a Screencast for you that shows a batt insulation I downloaded and then add to my hatch library. I insert this into a wall that is closed on the ends. WHen I do this I see that the hatch needs to be rotated 90 degrees and then I scaled it up as well (x16). Lastly, I change the origin point for the hatch so it looks centered in the cavity.
