Hi Greg,
I'm not from Autodesk and I'm from Russia.
But this doesn't matter and I can try to answer your questions.

1. When I turn on the program I can select a number of templates. Three of them I get a full blue workable screen. The rest of them show a white template with a gray background which covers up the coordinate display. Are those templates with the gray background for AutoCad only and if they do work with LT then how do you turn off the gray background.
Three of them are saved in Model Layout and have "infinitive" virtual sheet. The others are saved in Layout and have grey space around "real" sheet of paper defined in Page Setup. You can always switch to Model Layout via Status Bar in these drawings and get the same working place as in first three templates. You do most of the work in Model Layout and switch to other Layouts to prepare drawings for printing (create viewports to Model space, insert Title block. etc.). You can treat each Layout as separate sheet of paper for printing.

2. On the command line copy clip keeps showing up on the command line and I have to clear it often. What is that all about.
Looks like you using some third parity clipboard manager which is not fully compatible with AutoCAD. Are you? Such as PopClip application?
If I don't understand your question correctly, could you illustrate it in more details?

3. When I try to set the limits and say set them to 12,9 the upper right hand corner of the screen is much higher. On my older AutoCad LT when I set the limits to 12,9 the upper right hand corner would always read 12,9.
If you don't have geometry in the drawing you can zoom to limits using ZOOM command with Extents option, than the upper right corner will be at place.
