Welcome to Autodesk Forums!

Hi Glenn,

In order to be able to open backup copy of the drawing (the file with .BAK extension) you just need to rename it in Finder:
- locate file you want to rename in Finder
- select it by clicking on it with mouse
- hit Return, than select BAK extension and replace with DWG, verify that there is a dot between file name and DWG extension
- answer "change to .dwg":

Also, I need ot know why a drawing I have been working on since February was converted to bak when I saved it last? Does this normally happen? ..

AutoCAD creates backup copy of the drawing by default each time you use QSAVE command. Could be so that you accidentally deleted original DWG, but its BAK copy remains on your Mac.
