Want to use a 1/2" end mill to machine a 2.375" diameter pocket with a 1" hex island. I'd like to use a helical move to rough out the pocket and then pick up the ID of pocket and OD of island. FeatureCAM wants to plunge with a zig-zag on all 6 sides of the hex which makes the cycle time too high. How can I force it to create a helical roughing pass?

Make a groove feature where you want the cutter to ramp into the part, use a long max ramp distance length so it will ramp all the way down.
Then set plunge ramp angle to 0 for the pocket and island so it doesn't ramp and use Total stock to avoid cutting air.
It's extra features but sometimes that's what ya gotta do, and it's way better than hand coding!
